about ME

My name is Amy Schmitt.  I am an Interior Decorator with over thirty years experience designing commercial and residential spaces. While my background experience began in retail merchandising and grew into commercial furniture, fixture, and retail store design, it’s my love of all things home related that has led me to where I am now.

My philosophy

I’m on a mission to help improve the quality of time people spend in their homes, by customizing it to their unique needs/wants.

Living beautifully isn't just about how your home looks; it's about how you 'feel' living in it. While function and beauty need to walk hand in hand, so much of that feeling is determined by how much time we devote to different activities within those walls. I strongly believe we live more with less clutter; and clutter is anything that gets in the way of how you want to live. So declutter your home. Shape an atmosphere that inspires hope and restoration in all areas of your and your family’s personal lives. My goal is to help you create a home that reminds you more of your focus than of your distractions. That starts with space.

Because our homes are where we begin and end our days, most of our routines happen here. Refocusing those routines by manipulating your space can help you feel a difference in the way you approach the rest of your life, too. Home should center you. It’s where your heart and priorities lie. It's time to come back home.

My approach

As a brand, I do not hone in on any one distinct interior design aesthetic. Instead, I take on a different voice for each individual client’s preferences and their home’s bones.

Often times, a home doesn't need a complete remodel, it just needs a fresh set of eyes to see other possibilities for it and the things in it. I specialize in creating plans that start with styling what you already own and then filling in from there. My three step process of edit, style, re-design is ideal for budget savvy homeowners because it provides an affordable option to a full scale remodel, without sacrificing quality. It breaks the decorating into stages that can be done incrementally or all at once. Your timetable. Your budget. Your choice.

My clients book me per hour to come in and help them at whatever stage of decorating they're in. Whether you'd just like to refresh a room and make more space by editing and rearranging (styling) the existing pieces OR you want to start over and need guidance seeing the big picture. I’ll help you define your style, create a master plan, and then prioritizing that into manageable steps that cover all your functional needs and budget.

Amy taught my husband and me how to approach our decorating decisions and then how to feel confident about our choices. She listened and then guided us toward a style that feels really authentic to who we are and how we live. I used to get so anxious about having anyone over to our house for the first time. Now it’s a source of pride and joy. It sounds silly to say decorating a house can make such a personal impact, but after working with her, our home makes me feel like I deserve to live like this. We love our home.

Amy is so talented, she should have her own HGTV show! Seriously. She can walk into your room and rearrange your existing furniture to make your room look 2x bigger. And recommend colors, furniture, and shapes that bring the whole room together in a highly stylish way. I love that she can use existing items vs. having to get all new too!

services/rates

$100 per hour

in home Consultation

The first in home appointment is a minimum of 2 hours. As we walk through your home, I'll listen to hear what is and is not working for you, see how each room flows with the rest of the house, discuss your wishes for each room's use, and I’ll start sharing ideas for possible solutions.

I’ll also take you through a series of questions regarding your material and style preferences. Your answers will build your personalized Style Profile which I’ll use to guide my direction as I suggest and choose new items for your room Re-design in step 3. This Style Profile is beneficial to you even if you choose not to proceed to step 3 because it helps ensure your future purchases stick to a cohesive theme.

Everyone’s home and amount of possessions are different. So you may find that you need all three of the following steps or just a combo of one or two of them. I will help you determine the right mix and order for your particular situation.

  1. IN Home EDIT

Once we've walked through your home, I'm able to create a mental inventory of your possessions and I know which pieces will look good together to tell a cohesive story. By focusing on how you want each room to feel and function, we’ll make mental and physical space for just those activities by removing anything that doesn’t fall into the following three requirements. 1. They make the room more functional, 2. They suit the style of the home. 3. They are meaningful to you. Items that no longer have a place are then donated, sold, or tossed.

In preparation for this step, it’s good to have an empty space set aside to temporarily hold the items that you will be selling. Anything that will be donated or tossed will be taken to your car or trash right away. A fair amount of professional organizing can take place with this step too. Budget anywhere from 2-4 hours per visit.

2. IN HOME STYLING

This step is about focusing on what you have, not what you lack. We discuss which room/s you want styled and then I repurpose and rearrange your existing pieces in a fresh new way. This involves moving furniture (often times between rooms), placing decor, and hanging artwork. Since we’ve already edited, we’ll only be working with the most useful pieces that you know you love. This ensures that the room does not get cluttered. The Styling and Editing steps almost always bleed into each other (unless there are a lot of possessions to edit.) You can expect these steps to run anywhere from 2-4 hours per visit.

A styling appointment can be booked anytime of the year; for a seasonal refresh, holiday decorating, or even to place all the new items purchased from your redesign package in step 3.

3. full room redesign

After styling the room/s with what you already own, there will most likely be some holes. This step fills in those gaps with a vision board and shopping list of the exact pieces you’ll need to pull the room together; i.e. your room redesign package. This can include paint colors, furnishings, rugs, art, window treatments etc. Once you own the shopping list, you can make your purchases as your budget and time allow.

To customize a look that is uniquely reflective of your home and your lifestyle, I’ll create a dialogue between your architecture, the style of the furnishings and decor you have decided to keep, and your dream aesthetic The benefit? It is timeless and able to evolve with you rather than being focused on any particular trend of the moment.

The process of creating the board and shopping list can take up to two weeks, during which we’ll be in frequent communication. Hours for this step are dependent on how many pieces are needed for each room. A typical room starts at 5 hours.

projects

Farm house Bedroom 1

Before, this bedroom was dark and had too many furnishings.  After, it is light, bright, and spacious.  One tall dresser, a nightstand, and crib were removed and replaced with a side table and rocking chair.  Both pieces were taken from other rooms in the home.  The brass bed was also moved in from another room.  The walls, ceiling, and ceiling fan were all given a fresh coat of paint.  New window treatments and bedding were purchased. Style tip; we used a fitted sheet and staple gun to cover the box spring for a custom upholstered look. Minimal cost for a big change.

Farm house Bedroom 2

This master suite was over run with mismatched furnishings.  Several pieces of furniture were removed; no additional pieces were brought in.  The walls, ceiling, and ceiling fan were repainted a fresh bright cream. The only newly purchased pieces were: bed sheets, the light blue throw pillow, and the landscape painting.  Everything else was found in other rooms and closets in the home.  Style tip; the window valances were made out of one of the homeowner's vintage linen table cloths. Now this room feels like a peaceful retreat.
